Case Study
Capturing the process and experience of a global network in local communities
Under the banner of their Democracy around the Globe focus area, the Kettering Foundation undertook an immersive in-continent consultation with their fellows and partners, with the vision of progressing their efforts to promote and defend inclusive democracies.
Their first time in South Africa and meeting for a multi-day agenda, the Foundation required content production services to preserve the proceedings and participation in video and image format. With our experience and understanding of the development and philanthropy sectors, we supported the Johannesburg leg of the agenda and produced short as well as long form content.
Content planning | Content capturing | Post-production |
---|---|---|
Guided by the agenda, convening objectives and locations, we planned the in-room layout and storyboarded how the content should be played to viewers. This informed our technical resource planning and helped us work efficiently with the programme. | Discreetly, with respect to the participants, and in an integrated manner our crew captured the voices and visuals of the proceedingsThrough thoughtful planning, the crew were able to work in a coordinated manner and gather sufficient content to enable post production. | With the voices and visuals captured, the post-production team edited hours and hundreds of footages to compile in to accessible content for the Foundation to disseminate as part of their programme and communications objectives. |

The Outcome
Our service and expertise brought remarkable outcomes, namely:
• A playlist of long form session and panel recordings that captured both the stage speakers and the participating audience.
• Interview style content with select participants which were inviting to watch.
• A highlight video of the full proceedings, with b-roll and voice overs which offered a summary of the agenda and location experience.
Our Reflections
1 – Working with a diverse team and across different time zones for a convening where we would meet in person for the first time when content capturing began, the time spent beforehand to understand the objectives and agenda was a valuable enabler for delivery.
2 – Understanding the audience can inform the technical planning and implementation. Zoom shots, camera pans and the types of b-roll should be thoughtfully considered
3 – Knowing and anticipating the agenda allows the crew to capture the programme without interrupting the participants.
Feedback from the client
We enjoyed easy communication via zoom and email in advance of our meetings and were able to seamlessly continue our communications when we met in person.
The team was capable and discreet, capturing excellent footage while doing so in a manner that was not at all disruptive of the meetings. They were also agile and responsive, easily adapting to additional filming opportunities that emerged during the week. The final video products were also excellent, from the full panel discussions to the lively, insightful video that was produced for us with highlights from the week.
